There should be more logic options in your templates, across the board. Instead of having to make up a template for every product group, or collection, having just one, with conditionals around the various elements would be great. Then you'd need much less templates to have to manage.
For instance, a piece of content that I made is "Specifications Table" which has specs for the given collection. Since each collection is different, so are the types of specifications. So I have to make different template for each collection so I can include the appropriate table. I would rather IF Product-type =XXX Show {{This Code}}. ELSE IF Product type=YYY {{This Code}}.
Ideally, you should be able to use Metafields everywhere, like in Tables. Or in content, so you could write a piece of text that has some generic text but also integrates {{CUSTOM.META}} like "When you choose the {{CUSTOM.MODELNUMBER}}, you're getting {{CUSTOM.FEATURE1}} for your {{CUSTOM.APPLICATION1}}." and put that on your page.
Any time you want to make change to the look or functionality, you have to change all of the templates.
The whole benefit of Shopify being a databased system is to utilize logic and repurpose content, not having to make so many explicit versions.
